Driving Licences

- Drivers who passed their test before 1st January 1997, can drive a motorhome weighing up to 7,500 kgMTPLM/MAM (maximum technically permissable laden mass/ maximum authorised mass)ontheir B licence.
- When that driver achieves the age of 70, they can retain the right to drive a vehicle of up to 3, 500 kgMTPLM on the same basis as for a car ie three year renewal.
- If the driver wishes to continue to drive a vehicle over 3500kg, they must submit the medical form D4,completed by their doctor, with their renewal application
- If a driver passed their test after 1st January 1997, they can drive a motorhome of up to 3500kg on a B licence
- If the driver wishes to drive a motorhome of 3.501 kg MTPLM - 7500kg MTPLM, they must take an additional test to obtain a C1 licence.
- For all drivers: Over 7,500 kg MTPLM a full C driving licence is required, which in turn means passing the relevantC test.
Licence Definitions
Category B
With this category on your driving licence you can drive vehicles with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 3500 kilograms (kg), with eight passenger seats, and with a trailer no heavier than 750kg.
It's also possible to tow a trailer heavier than 750kg if the MAM of the vehicle and trailer together is no more than 3500kg. The trailer must also be lighter than the vehicle towing it.
To tow a heavier trailer than mentioned above you'll need category B+E.
Category C1
With this category you can drive vehicles with a MAM over 3500kg but less than 7500kg with a trailer no heavier than 750kg. To tow a heavier trailer you'll need category C1+E.
Category C
With this category you can drive vehicles with a MAM over 3500kg with a trailer no heavier than 750kg. To tow a trailer that weighs more than 750kg you'll need category C+E.
